REMINDER:

On Saturday, March 28, 2009, from 8:30 p.m.to 9:30. I will be taking part in Switch off Your Lights for Earth Hour, sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund, and I encourage everyone passing by this blog to do the same.

I’ll be joining tens of millions of concerned citizens and corporations in calling for action to save our planet for future generations.

Please do your part and participate! That does not require much, just in switch off the lights for one hour. Mother earth will say thank you.
That can be a good opportunity to invite friends over for a candle light dinner.

Sydney Festival First Night took place in Sydney’s CBD, across its streets, laneways and parks on January 10, 2009.

“The first Sydney Festival took place in 1977. It has since grown to become one of Australia's largest annual cultural celebrations with an international reputation for modern, popular and intelligent programming.” (Txt from: http://www.arts.nsw.gov.au)

The festivity has actually started at 2pm, on Hyde Park, with many entertainments, across two stages, plus nomadic performers everywhere.

The festival offers a varied of programs that cover nearly all art forms for all age groups.
The Chosen theme for 2009 is “Sydney Dances”, as they say:-“we want you to help us transform the CBD into one mass dance floor!”( http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au)
I have to say that they were able to active that. The evening entertainments at Hyde Park were really a massive and crowded “night club”; but that have not stopped there,for three weeks in January, the Festival will hosts around 80 events involving upwards of 500 artists from Australia and abroad. So come and check it out.

End of 2008 starting 2009

That is past - end of Year and Beginning of another.
However for some of us that is more than just that.
2008 marked the year that the first group of photography students completed the photography course through School of visual Arts at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, NSW.
The students had a graduation exhibition highlighting some of their works at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, Links Gallery.

The exhibition received the name “Solo” was opened by Dr Martyn Jolly (Head of Photography and Media Arts at the Australian National University) on Saturday 22 and that is going to stay on until the Sunday 11 January 2009.
So if anyone reading this, by any reason, are going to be near Wagga Wagga this weekend, go and have a look at some of the “new” photographers that started on the scene.
I would like to say congratulation to Kate and Matt for have their images chosen to be shown at National Photographic Portrait - All the best guys.
I also would like and state here a special thank you to James Holcombe, Margaret Waller and Johannes Klabbers for all their help through the past years, and for been such great tutors. That was a pleasure to have the opportunity to meet you all, and an honor to have my work shown at the same space as yours. I hope someday to do that again.

landscape and myth in a surreal way

“Mule-without-head”
According to this legend, any women that have the power to seduce priest and consume any loving relationship with them, would be punishment for her sins would become a Mule-without-head.
The Mule-without-head metamorphosis would occur in the night of Thursday to Friday, when the woman became a mule-without-head body and runs wildly quick when exhausted she returns to be a normal woman.
The Mule-without-head is part of the human unconscious side that would be perhaps a suitable stereotype of the creatures that populate the forests in Brazil, representing the deep layers of the unconscious and the instinct. As well as the werewolf, the mule-without-head is wild and act among her instincts.
This tale was base on the influence and morals imposed by the Catholic Church, and could have a connection to the horrors of the hunting to the witches during the Inquisition.
The Mule-without-head is a cursed woman that has the power to seduce. This story makes an allusion to the fear that priests had in old days from feminine power. Such fears, had taken them the desperation and attitudes like the creation of legends, made them to abstain from any contact with the opposing sex.

Into the clime of today class

Into the clime of all the argument about fashion been related to sex that my class had today; as well as the style of images from the last 2 posts – “fashion”; I decided to bring this post on.
I do strongly agree that photography is related to sex; even if we try to not get into that. If we use fashion photography as form of research and inspiration ,we are have much like to end up using poses that are suggestive to sex.
The proper devise (I am talking about the lenses here) is sexual, and several are the jokes about the size of your camera – lenses. Any way that is just a stupid point, but still valid!?!?!
Everyone knows that sex sell; and that is something that most photographers know; using and abusing of it. But until what point is that ok? What is really going on?
I know that place a woman or even a male in fashion photography can be linked to bad things; like for example the objectification of her; but is it really a bad think? I am not here to say anything about good or bad, because after all I myself do fashion style images and I know (it is my intention) to make that look sexy.
My main intention when taking the fashion images was not really to be extreme but insinuate something. I personally like the all idea of female fatale.
Feminists will hate me for what I have to say, but some people really like be photographer in a sexy way, so why not make use of our sexuality. I do know that sometimes that can be misinterpreted and misused, but I also believe that if well used that can be beautiful.

Tumut

This small Beautiful town nestled in the Tumut Valley at the foothills of the Snowy Mountains was one of the places that I have used to create some fashion photos.

Most of the images were taken near the Tumut River, which runs for 145 km before joining the Murrumbidgee River at Gundagai, at the end of the afternoon.

My model was a gorgeous Brazilian that moved recently to the region with her 2 children and husband, and which I need to thanks for been up to help me.

Tumut is located 423 km from Sydney and 180 km from Canberra via the Hume Highway.

All photos were taken with natural light at the end of the afternoon.

Curupira

All people have their traditions, superstitions and believe that are passed through generations throughout legends, stories, proverbs and songs.

Into a more artistic idea; I have produced 2 images based on the Curupira tale, ( see - http://www.pantheon.org/articles/c/curupira.html ).

These images are part of my work based on the idea of produce photographic works that shall be used as illustrations for folklore tales.

My intention is not produce an “accurate” image of how these mythological beings are described, but how I record them from the time the tales were told me.

The word Folklore is a term that designates the entire culture. It usually came up from simple people, in the shape of unwritten stories or songs. Because they unwritten and passed on from generation to generation; analysing these stories can be really fun. The interpretation of how things will look like will be different from person to person, changing from one region to other or one generation to other. These stories end up been like a Chinese whisper.

I was having a look at some images that I took with my little “point and shot” canon and I found some really cool images there; shame they are just jpgs but any way I can always go and reshoot, that is the good thing about architecture shoots. If you are happy with the quality and look of the final images good, if not you can always go and re shoot because the building will go nowhere.

Unless you are REALLY out of look and get yourself into a situation like the 09/11 in USA with the 2 towers. The bright side of that into a photographer point of view is that, if you survive, you are able to get some extremely powerful journalistic/documentary images. Sorry for the comment I did not want to be insensitive, I was just thinking from a photographer point of view.

Shoes +model

I have done a photo shoot with a model – approximately 2 weeks ago and one of the ideas was to have her as a werewolf to connect that image with the previously done shoes. The same background used at the shoes, as well as some props, used at the product images was also used at the model photo making a connection between them.
I am really happy with these images, and I believe that these 2 images work very well together. The model was really into the all idea and was able do delivers exactly what I wanted.

beer photos

The beer mask idea was not well received, so after spent a considerable amount on that I was back to step one on the beer photos ideas.
I reshoot the beer and stated to work in a different way. To be able to get a good image of the dark beer bottle I used a product tend, plus double diffused lights- 2.
At first I was getting photos of the models holding the beer by I realized that the images were not strong enough at the end, so I stated to place the actual beer over (another layer) the photos.
My designed masks were used at this photo to bring the previously idea of unite mythology/ fantasy into the product shoot idea. ( fashion + product)

Last Friday 08/08/08 at the same day of the opening of the Olympic Games I had the opportunity of get some musician photos, at a launch for Information Planet. The party was really great – well done Mauricio and all the information planet staff.
That was very interesting and exciting experience. The condition of light is extremely poor (for a photographer) and the use of flash would be a smart and correct alternative however I was more interested in experimenting (even doe I had the flash with me). The idea of get movement and different colours was much more interesting and exiting that to get “boring” basic events shoots.
I have used iso 400 and not 800 because I did not want too much granulation. The time varies between 1/25 seconds and 1/100 seconds depending of the image.
That was photographic experience that I sure want to participate again; hopefully soon as professional contacted photographer : P

Wonderland

I do hope it'll make me grow large again, for really I'm quite tired of being such a tiny little thing!'

It did so indeed, and much sooner than she had expected: before she had drunk half the bottle, she found her head pressing against the ceiling, and had to stoop to save her neck from being broken. She hastily put down the bottle, saying to herself 'That's quite enough—I hope I shan't grow any more—As it is, I can't get out at the door—I do wish I hadn't drunk quite so much!'

Beer Genie - or elf.

Last Friday night I borrow a canon 5D and I was taking some wine and beer bottles and glass photos until I get bored and decided go to read “the darkroom – photography and theatre of desire” by Anne Marsh. The chapter 4 and 5 really got my attention. I have not each finished read all that but the all talk about surrealism, theatrical production, death bed portraits, and paranormal really got me into the mood to be doing some product shots in a completely different way.
I have been designing some masks as props for some folkloric and mythological being that I wish to be creating so I had an idea. Why not use the masks as a symbol of “human” or better saying “mythological” creature – that work like a sort of ghost - paranormal thing happening, that materialize part of itself over the beer bottle; or even the more crazy thinking that came to my mind when I was doing the photos - would be the feeling of this “mythological” creature been a “component”, sort of like inside the beer genie thing. – (devil inside the bottle _ BR folklore)
So I did. The photos here are the product of this idea of this paranormal being that came from the darkness and when in contact with the beer become fun and colourful.
Hope people like the idea :)

week2 - shoes againg

The shoes images were reshoot with a different light setting (light the shoes from underneath to get the detail line of the black shoes on black background) and showing the heel (detail that suppose to be shown when photographing shoes with the intention of been a product (add)); I have also done another scene “the mermaid” shoes.

Having a look around I stated to actually realize that the heel are shown when they are different (have some feature), that is not a rule always show the heel, if the top ( front) of the shoes is the most interesting area I do not see why not give emphasis to that .

Project 2008 part one – first week portraits

This series of portraits explore my memory, perception and interpretation of a folkloric mythology being called “Curupira”. (The Curupira is a male supernatural being which guards the forest in Tupi mythology.) The Curupira blends many features of West-African and European fairies but was usually regarded as a demonic figure.
As sad the actual “original” being is a male figure however, my thought over that was why Curupira could not be a woman? The tale talks about a being that confuses and make hunters get lost into the woods; so why not work with the idea that the hunter would get “lost” into the woods / floret because of something that would look like a nymph.

I made use of mask as an allusion to the African Culture influences on Brasilian culture African orishas – OBATALA).

Project 2008 part one – first week

Project 2008 part one – first weekStill life
For the first part I have been taking photos of shoes and creating the feeling of the scene by using collage, applying ink drawings, other photos and Photoshop brushes. The theme used to be creating these images is the based on werewolf tales (humans with the ability to shape shift into wolves or wolf-like creatures), obviously in a more seductive – fetish way. The suggestion here is bring this idea of a stronger, sex, dangerous, nocturne werewolf women, which enjoy those shoes.
This images were developed having in mind commercial product shots images, however in a more playful and artistic way. These images will be used to represent the werewolf on my series of folkloric mythological beings.
Images mainly influenced by photographer Alexia Sinclair and Dave McKean illustrations.

CSU 2009 prospectus photo shot.

CSU creates annually a series of undergraduate, postgraduate, international and general Prospectus.
The Prospectus provides an overview of CSU vision and mission, Campus locations, services, commitment to research, as well as a listing of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
I was invited to work with Amy Lee ( CSU graphic designer and art director for the photo shot) to be creating the covers for the 2009 publications. The photos were divided in 2 sections some students’ portraits in studio and some actions shots at the university hills (external photo shot).
Work with an art director make thinks go faster and more organized than when you (the photographer) are the one that need to take care of every aspect of the photo shot. This experience of work in group to be creating someone else idea was very important and a extremely great experience.

CSU vice and Premier of NSW photo

I was invited to be taken some “journalistic” photos at the opening of the CSU inland portrait exhibition in Sydney last April. The opportunity and experience was great, even not been a payed work, and the main thing that I learned was – NEVER be dressed in high heel for a long event photo shot. Stupidity of my part, but I learned : P
One of my images taken during that night was published at CSU news and the other reaming as part of their photo data base.
